Lead a chapter as a high school student

High school students can start and lead STEM Sprouts chapters in their schools or communities. Chapter Leads plan hands-on STEM workshops, recruit volunteers, partner with schools and libraries, and bring free STEM education to elementary school students.

Who's behind STEM Sprouts?

STEM Sprouts is a student-led nonprofit providing free, hands-on STEM education to elementary school students through student-run chapters. What started as a small group of students is growing into a movement, with chapters and partners joining from communities everywhere, supported by Pinboard, our open-source STEM platform.

What began as a small pilot is now reaching students across rural Kenya, bringing hands-on STEM to communities that rarely have access to it.

  • 15-School Siaya Cohort Launch

    STEM Sprouts Kenya is rolling out hands-on programming across 15 schools in Siaya County.

  • Girls in STEM, Rural Kenya

    A dedicated focus on getting girls in rural communities into robotics, coding, and hands-on science.

  • CBC Curriculum Alignment

    Lessons are built to align with Kenya's Competency-Based Curriculum, so schools can adopt them directly.

Our Own Platform

Pinboard: real Arduino code, zero hardware required

Built and maintained by our own students, Pinboard lets young makers drag-and-drop blocks into real Arduino code, run it against a live simulated circuit, and learn through guided lessons, right in the browser. Fully open source on GitHub, with free cloud project sync for every chapter to adopt.

Squeeze the Profit Workshop - Forsyth Chapter

Our Lemonade Stand Workshop introduced kids to entrepreneurship through a fun, hands-on activity where they designed and built miniature lemonade stands using popsicle sticks and limited resources. Along the way, they learned valuable skills in creativity, budgeting, marketing, and outreach while exploring what it takes to start a business.

STEM Sprouts was invited to the Global Sustainability Awards North America at Emory University's Goizueta Business School, where our team hosted a booth to share our work in Kenya and connected with event organizers and awardees.

STEM Sprouts Kenya Lead Judges at Young Scientists Kenya

The judging experience directly informs several strands of the chapter's ongoing work, including the Applied AI Teacher Cohort, the Msingi Kwanza framework, and the chapter's engagement in Kenya's AI Bill advocacy. Insights from the fair will help ensure student projects coming out of partner schools are better aligned with national judging standards ahead of future cycles.
