Squeeze the Profit Workshop: Building Young Entrepreneurs — STEM Sprouts

Our recent entrepreneurship workshop gave kids the opportunity to explore what it takes to start and run their own small business. Through a fun, hands-on activity, participants were challenged to design and build their own miniature lemonade stands using popsicle sticks and a limited amount of resources. The goal of this workshop was to introduce kids to important business concepts such as creativity, budgeting, marketing, and problem-solving while allowing them to learn through experience.

The workshop began with an introduction to entrepreneurship and what it means to turn an idea into a business. We discussed how successful businesses often start with a simple idea and grow through planning, creativity, and hard work. The kids were then introduced to their main challenge: creating their very own lemonade stand designs using popsicle sticks and other basic materials.

One of the biggest lessons throughout the workshop was learning how to work with limited resources. Each participant had to think carefully about how to use the materials available to them while still creating a stand that was both functional and visually appealing. This encouraged them to think creatively, make decisions, and understand that starting a business does not always require a large amount of money. Instead, success can come from making smart choices and using what is available effectively.

As the kids worked on their lemonade stands, they were encouraged to develop unique designs that would help their businesses stand out. Some focused on the structure of their stands, while others explored ways to make their designs more attractive to potential customers. This activity helped demonstrate the importance of creativity and innovation in entrepreneurship, showing how even small details can make a business different from its competitors.

Another important part of the workshop focused on marketing and outreach. We taught the participants how businesses attract customers and why promoting a product is just as important as creating it. The kids learned about the importance of making their lemonade stands appealing, communicating with customers, and finding ways to spread awareness about their businesses. Through these discussions, they began to understand how marketing plays a role in helping a business grow and reach more people.

We also introduced basic budgeting skills to help participants understand the financial side of entrepreneurship. The kids learned why business owners need to manage their money carefully, consider the cost of materials, and make decisions based on their available budget. By connecting these lessons to their lemonade stand projects, we made financial concepts easier to understand and more relatable to real-life situations.

Throughout the workshop, the participants were able to practice teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving while bringing their ideas to life. The hands-on experience allowed them to see how different parts of running a business connect, from designing a product to managing resources and attracting customers.

Overall, the lemonade stand workshop was an opportunity to introduce young students to the world of entrepreneurship in an engaging and interactive way. By combining creativity with practical business lessons, we hoped to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs and show them that even the simplest ideas can become something meaningful with the right planning, effort, and imagination.
